Hillebrand was of Dutch descent, born in Albany N.Y.
Marie-Anne Leber, who was first married to Antoine Barrois, in Montreal, moved to NY with her husband and their 6 children. When her first husband died, she married Hillebrand.
Jean Baptiste and his brother Francois were born of this 2nd marriage. They too were initially baptized in the Dutch Reform Church in Albany, NY. Later, the whole family once again returned to Quebec, in Laprairie. The children were baptized for a second time in the Catholic faith when they reached Quebec.
Hillebrand Lootman, who had also been baptized at birth in the Dutch Reform Church, was (at the age of 37) baptized as a Catholic in November 1699 in Montreal. It was during this ceremony that he took the new French name "Jean-Baptiste" Lootman. This seems to be the name often used by historians after that date.
Jean-Baptiste and his brother Francois were often called Lootman dit Barrois (a combination of their father's name and that of their mother's first husband).
